Quick Answer

LED downlight installation in London costs £35–£55 per fitting on existing wiring or £75–£120 with a new cable run. Pendant replacement is £45–£80, smart switches £85–£140. Every install is fire-rated, Part P notified by an NICEIC electrician and certified with a Minor Works Certificate or EIC.

LED lighting that lasts the property

LED has moved from a value play to the default specification on every London install — domestic and commercial. The energy saving over halogen and fluorescent is in the 70–85% range, lamp life is rated at 25,000–50,000 hours rather than 1,000–2,000, and the colour rendering on high-CRI fittings now matches old tungsten without the heat. The trick is in the installation: fire rating, IC rating, driver pairing and dimmer matching all have to be right or the system flickers, buzzes or fails Part P.

Every LED job here goes through the same checklist. Ceiling void surveyed, joists located, insulation type identified, existing circuit load calculated. Fire-rated fittings cut in to BS 476 Part 21 standards for habitable-room ceilings. Drivers paired to trailing-edge dimmers — no leading-edge TRIAC dimmers left on the wall to whine and flicker. Smart hubs commissioned, scenes built in the app, walkthrough on handover. Every job is signed off with a Minor Works Certificate or Electrical Installation Certificate.

LED installs sit inside a wider electrical scope — see the parent Electrical Work London hub for everything from socket and switch installs to a full property rewire.

Smart lighting — Hue, Lutron and beyond

Smart lighting only works when the install is done right. Most retrofit headaches come down to the same three issues: missing neutral at the switch, wrong dimmer family on a dimmable LED driver, or a hub commissioned without scenes so the system feels worse than the dumb one it replaced. We handle all three on every smart-lighting visit.

Philips Hue gets a Hue Bridge plus colour-changing or white-ambience bulbs, Hue dimmer switches and motion sensors where needed. Lutron Caséta gets the Smart Hub Pro 2 wired in, Caséta wireless dimmers replacing the existing wall switches, and Pico remotes where extra control points are wanted without running new cable. Aqara and Shelly retrofits work neatly behind existing switches for hidden smart upgrades that keep the original wall plate. Every system gets routines and scenes built in the app and a walkthrough on handover.

Commercial LED retrofits

Offices, retail, hospitality, salons, gyms and warehouses across London routinely retrofit out legacy lighting. Flickering 5-foot fluorescents go to high-CRI LED panels or linear battens. SON and metal-halide high-bay lamps in warehouses go to 150–240W LED high-bay with appropriate beam optics. Halogen track in retail goes to dimmable LED GU10 with the existing track preserved. The payback maths is sharp — commercial premises with 12+ hour burn times typically recover the install cost in 8–14 months.

Every commercial retrofit is scoped with a written lumen-per-m² and circuit-load calculation, then scheduled around trading hours. Out-of-hours, weekend and overnight work is available at no premium on contracted sites. An Electrical Installation Certificate is issued at handover and lodged with the building's compliance file.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does LED downlight installation cost in London?
An LED downlight installed into an existing ceiling cut-out, reusing the existing wiring, costs £35–£55 per fitting. A brand-new downlight with a fresh cable run from the lighting circuit is £75–£120 per fitting depending on access. Pendant replacements are £45–£80 each. Smart switches with neutral run £85–£140 fitted. All prices include the fitting, lamp and labour.
Do all new downlights need to be fire-rated?
If the downlight pierces a fire-resisting ceiling — which covers almost every ceiling under a habitable room in a flat or HMO — the fitting must be fire-rated to BS 476 Part 21 to maintain the 30, 60 or 90-minute fire compartment. We only fit fire-rated downlights as standard, and IC-rated versions where insulation sits in the ceiling void. The Building Regulations Approved Document B is explicit on this.
Can you install Philips Hue or Lutron in my flat?
Yes. We fit and commission Philips Hue, Lutron Caséta, Aqara, Shelly and LIFX systems across London — hub installed, smart bulbs or fittings paired, smart switches wired into the back box (a neutral conductor is needed for most), scenes and routines built in the app and handed over with documentation. Hue and Lutron retrofits work fine on most existing wiring; if a neutral is missing we either pull one in or fit a switch that operates without one.
Will LED downlights work with my existing dimmer?
Often, but not always. Older leading-edge (TRIAC) dimmers were designed for halogen and incandescent loads and frequently flicker or buzz when paired with LEDs. Modern trailing-edge dimmers (Varilight V-Pro, Lutron, MK Logic) work cleanly with dimmable LED drivers. We test the existing dimmer on the new fittings and swap it out for a trailing-edge unit at £45–£65 if there is any flicker or hum.
How long does a downlight installation take?
A like-for-like swap of 6 downlights into existing cut-outs takes around 1–2 hours including testing and tidy. A fresh install of 6 new downlights with cable runs, fire-rated fittings and a new dimmer in a typical London flat is around 4–6 hours including making good. Smart lighting commissioning adds 45–90 minutes for hub setup, pairing and scene building.
Do you certify the work?
Yes. Every installation is signed off by an NICEIC-registered electrician. New circuits or significant alterations are notified under Part P of the Building Regulations and issued with an Electrical Installation Certificate. Like-for-like swaps and minor additions are issued with a Minor Works Certificate. Both are accepted by London boroughs, letting agents and home insurers as evidence of compliant installation.
Can you install garden and outdoor lighting?
Yes. Garden lighting is run as a dedicated RCD-protected circuit from the consumer unit, with SWA armoured cable buried at the correct depth or clipped to the rear of the property. Fittings are IP65 or better and rated for UK weather. Path, wall, festoon and uplight schemes can be controlled by photocell, timer or smart hub. Outdoor sockets and EV-charger pre-wiring can be added on the same visit.
Do you do commercial LED retrofits?
Yes. Offices, retail units, salons, gyms, warehouses and light-industrial premises across London routinely book LED retrofits — flickering fluorescents, end-of-life sodium high-bay, halogen track lighting. We swap to high-CRI panel, linear or high-bay LED with appropriate lumen output and colour temperature, document the lumen-per-circuit calculation and issue an EIC. Out-of-hours scheduling is available at no premium on contracted sites.
Will LED save me money on my electricity bill?
Yes — typically a 70–85% reduction on lighting energy compared with halogen GU10. A kitchen with twelve 50W halogens runs at 600W. The same twelve replaced with 5W LED runs at 60W — a tenth of the consumption for the same lumen output. At current London electricity tariffs the payback on a full kitchen swap is usually 10–18 months on a working household, faster on commercial premises with long burn hours.
Can you install lighting at the same time as other electrical work?
Yes. LED lighting often pairs naturally with a consumer unit upgrade, a full rewire or a kitchen refurb — see our /full-rewire-london and /socket-switch-installation-london pages. Combining visits saves call-out time and means a single EIC covers the whole installation. We can also coordinate around plumbing, kitchen-fit and decorator schedules.
