What we cover

Our London carpenters work across both first-fix and second-fix joinery — from stripping out and replacing skirting and architrave through to designing and installing full-height bespoke wardrobes, MDF media walls and bench seating. Most jobs are completed by one carpenter inside a single day; larger built-ins run with a two-person crew and pre-cut workshop parts.

  • Built-in alcove wardrobes — full-height MDF carcasses, hanging rails, fixed shelves and drawer modules
  • Floating alcove shelves — scribed to plaster, supported on hidden brackets or French cleats
  • Bespoke MDF media units and TV walls — cable management, AV access, fluted or panel detailing
  • Skirting board and architrave — Torus, Ogee, Ovolo or square-edge profiles up to 195 mm
  • Internal door hanging — pre-finished, primed, oak or moulded doors on existing or new linings
  • Loft hatches and Youngman drop-down loft ladders — fully insulated and draught-sealed
  • Stud partition walls — CLS frame, acoustic mineral wool, plasterboard ready for plasterer
  • Kitchen island carcasses and bench seating — flat-pack assembly and bespoke build alike
  • Window boards, picture rails, dado rails, wall panelling and shaker panelling
  • Floorboard lifting, re-fixing and patch repairs — including under-floor heating-friendly installs

How it works

1

Free quote

Call 0207 046 1363 or send measurements and photos on WhatsApp. For larger built-ins a 20-minute home survey is booked, free and no obligation.

2

Fixed price + drawings

A written fixed-price quote is sent over within 24 hours with a sketch of the proposed build. Material samples (MDF, oak, primed pine) brought to a second visit if needed.

3

Build day

Carpenter arrives in a sign-written van with dust sheets, mitre saw on a dust-extracted stand and a track saw for clean on-site cuts. Workshop pre-cut parts brought in finished where the job allows.

4

Finish + handover

All joinery primed and sanded, ready for paint — or sprayed in-situ if specified. Site cleaned, off-cuts removed, photos shared, 12-month workmanship guarantee logged.

Built-in wardrobes and alcove shelving

Period London property is rarely square. A built-in wardrobe carcass is always scribed to the wall — front face plumb, back edge cut to follow the irregular plaster behind it. We carry a Festool track saw and a Mafell trim saw on every van for clean cuts in-situ, and dust-extract every cut to keep finished rooms clean.

Carcasses are 18 mm MDF as standard, with optional 25 mm doors in shaker, flat, panelled or fluted profiles. Drawer modules run on Blum soft-close runners with Blumotion hinges. Hanging rails are oval chrome on Blum spindle brackets. Internal lighting is wired by an electrician working in parallel — most builds are wired and switched the same week.

Spray finishing in-situ is offered on premium builds: doors removed, walls and floor masked, two coats of water-based satin sprayed with an HVLP gun for a factory-grade finish. Off-site spray-then-fit is also available where the design suits it.

Skirting, architrave and trim work

Replacing skirting and architrave is one of the highest-impact upgrades in a refurbished room. We strip out old trim, scribe new MDF or primed pine to follow real-world floor and plaster levels, and finish with hand-mitred external corners and scribed internal joins. Profiles in stock include Torus, Ogee, Ovolo, square-edge and a deep 195 mm Victorian profile for higher period rooms.

Door hanging is priced per door — pre-finished, primed, oak or moulded internal doors on existing or new linings. Where the lining itself is twisted or rotten the lining is replaced as a separate quoted line. For a wider refurbishment, carpentry can be coordinated with other trades on our General Repairs London service so plastering, decorating and electrical second-fix all sequence cleanly.

Areas covered

Carpentry and joinery work is carried out across all 32 London boroughs. Heaviest booking volumes come from Camden, Islington, Hackney, Wandsworth, Lambeth, Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do carpenters charge per hour in London?
A qualified London carpenter charges £75–£110 per hour depending on experience, day-rate vs hourly, and whether finishing work (priming, spraying) is included. Day rates run £450–£700 for a full 8-hour day. Small jobs under 2 hours are charged at a flat call-out plus labour. All prices include VAT.
How much does a built-in wardrobe cost in London?
A floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobe in 18 mm MDF costs £650–£950 per linear metre installed, before paint. A typical 3 m alcove run with hanging rail, drawers and shelves lands between £2,200 and £2,800. Solid oak or veneered carcasses add roughly 40–60% to the carcass cost. Sprayed-in-situ paint finish adds £200–£400 per metre.
Do you make bespoke alcove shelving for chimney breasts?
Yes — alcove shelves either side of a chimney breast are one of the most common bookings. Each shelf is scribed individually to the plaster (no two alcoves are ever square in a London period home) and supported on hidden French cleats or steel pins. A pair of 1.2 m alcove floating shelves in 18 mm MDF, primed for paint, is £280–£480.
Can you hang a new internal door?
Yes. Hanging a single internal door — supply unfinished or pre-finished door, fit on existing lining, fit 3 hinges, mortice latch and handle pair — is £120–£180 plus the door. If the lining needs replacing or the opening needs squaring up, that is quoted as a separate line.
How long does a built-in wardrobe take to install?
Two carpenters on a standard 3 m alcove wardrobe finish the carpentry in 1.5–2 days. Add half a day if MDF doors are made on site, and another half-day if the unit is sprayed in-situ. Pre-fabricated wardrobes from a workshop install in a single day where access allows.
Do you supply the materials or do I?
Either works. Most clients ask us to supply — MDF, primed pine, oak, hinges, drawer runners and ironmongery — at trade prices, with a 10% handling margin added to the quote. If you prefer to supply your own doors or specific hardware, we list exactly what to order and store it safely on arrival.
Are you insured?
Yes. £5,000,000 Public Liability cover through Hiscox UK and £5,000,000 Employers’ Liability. Certificates are available on request before any work starts. Company number 17120057.
Do you do skirting and architrave on its own?
Yes. Stripping out old skirting and architrave and replacing with new MDF or pine in your chosen profile (Torus, Ogee, Ovolo or square-edge) is £280–£480 per typical 12–14 m² room. The room is left dust-sheeted, off-cuts removed, primed ready for the decorator. Tiled or wooden floors are protected throughout.
Can you build a stud wall to divide a room?
Yes. A CLS-stud partition with 12.5 mm plasterboard each side and acoustic mineral wool insulation is £140–£200 per m² of partition. Door openings, sockets and any structural restraint are included. Plastering is a separate trade — we coordinate the plasterer or you can supply one.
Do you tidy up afterwards?
Always. The carpenter dust-sheets the area before starting, uses a mitre saw on a dust extractor, and vacuums down at the end of every day. Off-cuts, packaging and packaging tape are bagged and removed in our van — no waste is left at the property.
